Seeking Solace

after the rain I stepped out

for a walk on a quiet night

a gray cat called out and I turned

as she rushed forward from shadows

beneath the street library shelter

cats like books, I think

especially piles of them in corners

or open on your lap as you read aloud

my boots were muddy and wet

the cat wound herself round and round

my legs meowing with yearning

her coat was warm and slick

I spoke with her in low whispers

then curiosity distracted me

I paused cat stroking to straighten

open the door for a brief look

at the four rows of new and old books

while the cat mewed and slipped away again

I will not linger nor will I regret and yet

as I walked on my thoughts wandered

and I do admit

not one book spine in that wee library

gifted me anything like connection

like the trust of the small cat wet and crying

on a quiet night after the rain🪶

For Hope Look to the Sky

a spider and a ladybug arrived
from I don't know where
I watch them this morning
while balancing on the disk
I practice not falling from each day

the spider is black and a bit ugly
the ladybug is a ladybug
bug of Our Lady so elevated from
mere insect status maybe
who eats who is my question
I leave them to sort it out

two creatures in my window
their tiny footprints in slips of sunlight
remind me of last night's eclipse
how insignificant was my quiet presence
camouflaged by midnight
standing barefoot outside looking to the sky

my existence altered nothing
my breath barely stirred the March night air
yet I was there wasn't I
one more night creature alive and awed
under the moon and stars
my thoughts riding waves of night clouds
praying to nothing for everything

Kairos

when the hard news of chaos shakes

rearranges what you imagine

dependable like the colours in your

palette familiar

shapes you see before you trace them

give life to your every day

pause—

hands in pockets eyes on your peace landscape

feet balanced on even quiet ground

reflex reaction is only fear in motion

clarity won’t chance appearance until

anger and despair have bitten hard

their valid moment of bitter campaign

then your self resurfaces from the brink

who you are at the core

have always been

knowledge intact

darkness and light coexist for this journey

there are no detours

no easy roads

find a friend you can count on

strum steady keep time reclaim your beat

to stumble is to discover

breathe in the fragrant present

decay cannot breach your armour

know well the colour nature shape

of your future and the sound of its song

hold steady trust in the timelessness

of your light🪶

Gallery

so easy just to stay home

rapt in my own attention

yet to thrive outside

of a dream shouldn’t a person sometime

take a stroll? chance to change

sigh and step out of comfort’s reverie

if just to look at what lies out there

Maybe.

I aimed for the gallery

I heard the show would be one

worthy of effort

of wearing boots

combing hair (sort of)

cake wine and talking

walking into crowds

noting timbre of voices

sifting through shapes and heat

but the rain—

here it rains a lot and so what?

I have a red umbrella

but parking—

there’s patience and an app for that

enroute I met the young one

a help me sign and an upturned hat

five bucks in his hand to appear I am kind

oh yes art is good for a soul

even if rain blurs my view

it gifts opportunity to think

who designed that red brick archway

maybe in summer an installation

can feature there.

please do not talk to me when I am

gazing into artworks

taking in means me taking time

sometimes falling or slipping inside

artists speak deep through their works

but you must be quiet to hear

The gallery is alive

a population rich with wordless

beauty celebration exploration provocation

help cries questions remembrance exaltation

I signed the book illegibly

identity being less important than

the sincerity of my response

I nicked one more chocolate covered

strawberry before my exit

the man resting under his sleeping bag

in that doorway seemed

happy to see me🪶

The Door

and so now it’s your turn

go where many before have crossed in

imagination ignite

light up your craven corner of shadow might

dust covered opining labelled wisdom

beliefs absent of truth or foundation

single paragraph cardboard arguments

no mirror required to see

what and who you’ve let yourself become

you already know you know you know

attention to the details

humbled by the mystery of a big world

your connection to your silver sacred thread

slow ponderous pacing outlasts

impatient gains and irreversible consequence

of haste disguised as efficiency

veiled doggerel passed off as intellect

breathe deep some clean air

there must still be some out there somewhere

nudge with intent but remember the gentle side

entrance is always free

the door is never locked to possibility

still it is your mind the chains must be

loosed from before you can begin

blood flows and a heart beats steady within

when you decide again

to be compassionately human🪶

An Undignified Death

an undignified death
I suspect it was
asking to confirm
is undignified too
messengers awake
ruminations at midnight
I am therefore I think
I know
yet none can confirm
anything
but the aftermath
no pulse check check
review the preview
no chance for change
no wings appeared
nothing but darkness
and the guy in the other bed
mute but still breathing🪶

Circle of Stones

contemplation by quiet low light

gather the things that hold meaning

stand before a window framing

a world you belong to and

think you know

reach for the ceiling

expecting a sky open wide

open arms

spread your wings

close your eyes

sway awhile

you wait

no answers to fall

no wisdom arrives

you’ve only a circle of stones

power rests in your will to survive

your silent unrecognized skill

to rearrange them🪶
