Seeking Solace

after the rain I stepped out

for a walk on a quiet night

a gray cat called out and I turned

as she rushed forward from shadows

beneath the street library shelter

cats like books, I think

especially piles of them in corners

or open on your lap as you read aloud

my boots were muddy and wet

the cat wound herself round and round

my legs meowing with yearning

her coat was warm and slick

I spoke with her in low whispers

then curiosity distracted me

I paused cat stroking to straighten

open the door for a brief look

at the four rows of new and old books

while the cat mewed and slipped away again

I will not linger nor will I regret and yet

as I walked on my thoughts wandered

and I do admit

not one book spine in that wee library

gifted me anything like connection

like the trust of the small cat wet and crying

on a quiet night after the rain🪶

Breath, Presence, Gone

Were you there, unblinking

to catch the sight

of the pink shoe taking flight

from a hurried woman’s mid step

last Wednesday?

No camera lens preserved it

though there may be others

who return to the smile maker memory

In the moment, scenes

arrange themselves

no director calling

no X cues on any floor

improbable improv unintended

You or I,

privileged serendipitous witness

accept the award with grace

its existence ours to keep, or

so we believe—-

While in the photo we captured

tacked with satisfaction

inside a frame only

a skeleton remains🪶

Cat on the Water Wheel

The old Siamese poses

for travellers who pause

to notice his still graceful presence

on the wheel in the autumn sunlight

They will focus

Depress the shutter

Believe they’ve captured true treasure

not knowing until they are home again

He was not there🪶

Endings

Maybe a thousand years from now

when no one knows my name

the one who finds the note I write

slipped between these silent walls tonight

will know this was once my house

surrounded by these tall pine woods

where I wandered with wild lilies, spring roses, and butterflies

where I stood looking up to wide open starry skies

talking with the moon

where I lit candles in empty rooms

And I photographed my cat

who sat waiting patiently near the door

so she wouldn’t be left behind.
