It’s Not Over There

when others across the world

suffer the crush of violence

my focus wanes

my mindfulness splinters

my equilibrium screams

how long how long how long

and again why

every breath takes effort

all serenity rattled

if my attempts to hold to the present

unravel and I stagger—

summon the spirits of the dead

whisper their names

though I do not know them—

are my actions those of empathy

sorrow for innocence bludgeoned

or do I only seek a glimmer of survival

a walking cane to aid me

until I regain my footing

step over this knowledge

this decaying humanity

unvividify my imagination of scenes

too far away to witness

horror beats its chest claiming a new win

leaking its vile stench for all to inhale

I withhold my breath

one day one day one day

leaders worthy of the role may lead

« put down that weapon

or we’ll all be gone« *

over there over here they are we we they

I listen to the birdsong after

morning’s rain

from a distance thought I heard

a peace prayer rising

voices across the world refusing

to surrender

I leaned in

and chose again to believe~

*from Midnight Oil’s Put Down That Weapon’

Humans Being

who first dreamed it into reality

what kind of person they/she/he

when did the idea first occur

where was the concept first presented

why did anyone else so readily agree

maybe some are born bereft

maybe some have eyes but no view

maybe some are burdened with fear

maybe some have heart but no soul

maybe some only revel in cruelty

humans being human are controllers

humans being human are conquerors

humans being human destroy

humans being human devour

humans being human justify

humans being human are capable

humans being human are community

humans being human respect

humans being human learn

humans being human rise like the sun

looking out from high ground

sweet birdsong all around and wind

beauty of potential whispers still

rhythms of possibility beat like a drum

where will we, humans being, go now?

Hope In An Age of Greed, Inequities, Starvation, and War

sometimes I leave my radio on

all night, allowing the flow

uncensored to enter, knowing

I will intake even the unsavoury—

opinions offered by those whose voices

to whom while awake

I would not wish to lend my ear

reports of horrors unfolding in places

to people I have no chance of saving

Probably this habit is unwise

oblivion and obfuscation are soothers

I might benefit from if only

I could learn to turn off that weak

aspect I cannot seem to reach

My hands will not allow my fingers

to unfold, to turn off the knowing dial

My empathy my horror my sorrow

outrage—-futile as it feels

still that I do feel, is confirmation

enough that I am still human

In the small sphere of this space that

is my privilege to occupy

I seek to be, to strive for better

some small nick of refuge in the chaos

I forage for balance amid cruelty

tune my ears to professors of peace

I stumble into the forest to commune

with the ragged beauty of nature

drink her sacred nectar to sustain me

I travel toward the rhythm of the drum

at the heart of true humanity

and I trust there is some distant day

wherein a pause will occur

a purifying rainfall

a deliverance of calm

a comprehensive gnosis

received in all languages

And then a universal agreement

declaring all lives of intrinsic value

conflict quieted for eternity

Hope dances with Possibility

the hopeful are tireless in our quest🪶

I Almost Didn’t

I make plans

I recognize

The Importance of Getting Out

I make plans

I get ready

or imagine what that means

Ready

I change my mind

Next time—

Friday I let pass

Saturday I look:

Yes Maybe maybe

I drive downtown

round and round

Is it okay

if I park upside down

Think to give up

I don’t mind

giving up

I’ll be late

how rude

Best go back home

pretend I went

Report how grand

was that cool event

How does this end

I park

I walk

I take it in

Art and Film

creative compassion

What grace

and a flimsy green empty chair

the gallery is hot

One opportunity

the night I went anyway

Sitting with Grace

a minor major Premiere

I was there

I was there

I’m still there🪶

Song of the World

I woke to the sound of singing
voices of the world
some are joyful
some in pain
experience, innocence
young, elders, boys and girls
I heard the songs of great lamenting
for hunger, cruelty, and shame
I heard the whispers of remembrance
and hope that still remains

After the Weekend

We here

in this moment

Microcosm

of wider world

How do

you like it

We ask

each from threshold

We issue

answer in a thousand tongues

Language

grunts moans murmurations

Signs

we carry lead us on

Colours

rainbow bold or fading arc

Humanity

naked beast still loading

Have I Noticed

Offerings of kindness

Rising in many voices

A choir of improvised repertoire

Without a director mouthing

Cues or wielding a baton

Movements of compassion

Calls for vigils of the voiceless

Sufferers hidden or locked away

Unimportant stragglers occupying

Shadowy edges of humanity

Fields of creativity

Undulating without want of rest

Collaborations across borders

Unheard of and unknown linking minds

With restlessly famous

Nests of hummingbirds

Barely larger than fairytale thimbles

Revealed as unexpected gifts

These hours and days of altered stasis

Toss madness with solitude’s clarity and wonder

Present Hiss

Writer philosophers birth idea volumes

defeat defiance despair existential disparity

Artists brushes soak in toxins

life cycle depiction or candid canvas prediction

Pleased to meet you, reality

Now it’s back to horses and dusty horse riders

Street battles wasting time

Stele entries forgotten or faded

No honoured heros names to add

Inspiration waits for the revival

Sipping tea in the wings
