Girl at the Parade

we parked beyond the street

people have taken as a tent village

that is another story of complexity

this one is focused on the beauty of

a single event but smaller even than that

though joy and rainbows and inclusion and

celebration of belonging are not small but

large and pulsing with life and possibility

I was there to witness and being a sentient

organism felt a multitude of emotions in

this aftermath of mysterious unwellness

I did briefly bar from my day’s awareness

all was colour and warmth and music and

rhythm and dance and extraversion yet

the focus of my memory while I sit quiet

now in the shade of magnolia blossoms with

my Charles de Lint novel is the image of

a small girl in her purple dress

in one hand gripping a pink carnation and

with her other hand waving waving waving

to all the painted smiling passersby🪶

Feasts

He is right.

Again

When they return

from their journey

the flowers

so fresh so fragrant so vibrant

when she bought them

discounted

one day before they left—

Now he reminds her of

her folly.

There he says

Your flowers are withered

Your money wasted

Your flowers dead.

She stands next

to the table silent

Then takes all but one of her flowers away

Yes you are right, just this one remains

But better flowers

were present at all

Better with flowers around

even if only for a single

colourful fresh fragrant vibrant day

I will remember their presence well

for beauty lingers

and even when this last one fades

beauty taken in never goes away.

If

If greed were not

perilous cave stones

If rotten meant

white lily fields

If insults evolved into

songs of the street

If net worth built

banks of knowledge

If prison cells were

schools for gardeners

If twisted lips

intended kindness:

Beauty might breathe,

unobstructed.
