The World is Lonely

In the place of tall trees

I go walking

Bird song rises

Human sounds fade

One or two dog wanderers quiet smiling

Calm passages

Light flicks between flutter leaves

There’s a chair been delivered by someone

maybe needing a place sometimes to go

maybe needing away from their chaotic all

Maybe they close their eyes here and listen

simmer runaway minds and just hum

The world is abundant

All is possible

There’s joy of life and there’s beauty

There’s danger threat and fear

The world can feel so heavy

Humanity’s suffering is everywhere plenty

Some of us find less Lonesome in here🪶

Fragile Peace

star magnolia succumbs

ancient limbs grown weary

one winter’s weight takes her all the way down

mourning gazes from dirty windows

absence reels in repetition

barren’s such heavy baggage

imagination is comfort escape

so dig a hole for remembrance

plant a seedling

aid her fragile will reach to grow

one bright spring birdsong morning

a single dogwood blossom opens

four tender petals

a fragile peace

balance on the wind🪶

Another Time in Time

Feelings: none is wrong

Some of these grow wings to fly

I stood a moment at the edge where

Your wounds may have bled awhile

And clouds glanced this way then passed on

Your monkey mind silenced by December’s cold

So hope slipped through

I felt it too

Peace from the inside🪶

Woman in Pink Marble

I first see them from a distance

Nine is the number I favour—

even focused how my mind wanders—

Three pink marble casts of women

and one Other in front

Three Ages

is three all we have I wonder

And if so in which age do I now occupy (Oh, I think I know)

standing while looking through the arch?

The room is quiet

its occupants art from the gifted whose

names I mostly until today have not known

Yes— the security guard breathes here with me

but he too is art

Still and quiet, occupying a

controlled temperature (and mannered) corner

A high seated black chair

I am movement, looking

Gliding Ghost passing through

I linger here for the sculptures—

Woman: Chrysalis for puberty

Coquetry for youth

Pomegranate Flower for maturity

The artist is Inurria, do you know him?

Resting on his side, though ‘resting’

fails to accurately describe the desperation

etched into the figure’s face,

is Castaway, agony and fear holding to the remains

of a ship’s mast

The faces of the Women are serene

placid cool

Or confident

How interpretation

How knowledge or pretence of it

How Art

How expression and experience

alters us

Shifts and realigns our consideration going forward

My eyes scan the works of others

These rooms are Many

but I see again and again the Woman

the Women in pink marble

and the one Man in peril clinging to safety

naked

I carry them with me through the heavy glass doors

of the gallery

Into the blinding sunlight

of the public street🪶

Is It Better

If you wait too long to die

the risk is real

People you know thin out

The risk is that

fewer

Fewer those who can plan

Fewer those who notice you went

Fewer those who show up

Fewer those to remember you

To tell your story.

My father told me

(I did not call him father, of course)

how sad the man across

the back lane had been

when his wife died.

They were always two people

together in their little silver Acadian

Then one.

Sad.

Not one person but he

attended her service

The man said

(His name was John)

My father said

John cried that day

It was warm in the late afternoon

and they drank whiskey

in the garage

until dark🪶

Tonight Did I Sit

Tonight I did sit with a friend

I raised a glass to her graceful way, her end

We shared some quiet joy laughter

unexpected—-what are these tears here for?

Recalled our unimportant stories

so we might rebuild, maybe make them new

We didn’t do any of that but sometimes

I wish I were that kind of resource wistful

Make her young and wise

Make her well—-

Clouds drew nearer

hey it looked a bit like beauty or a little rain

We held hands like child naturals

ran through faded long grass horse fields

I leaned back once, distracted by the wind

She could be so fast if you weren’t ready

something bigger happening somewhere

When I turned with a smile, half a word

still unfolding from I want to tell you this!

my hand held only brittle harvest seeds

memories falling like a stream

I called I didn’t I swear here everywhere

It’s only me here sitting silent held

together by heartbeat and the autumn winds

Still I am over and over

carry me one more

She is no longer there🪶
