The Red One

the look of red leaves on dampened earth

the way the little maple endures

gaunt trunk bent in deference to wilder

one season to next never thicker yet grand

its full red glory reflecting August’s fair light

leaning away from the giants encroaching

to catch a sliver of sun

its shimmer inviting juncos to alight for rest

while waiting their turn in the bath below

the shade of her wide mid summer canopy

the subtlety of her muted autumn shedding

scarlet leaves loosed one x one on windless

days to spin sway turn in improvised solos

each one an exalted prima in high spotlight

while a mere human in slack jaw wonder

slow breathes as single witness

awaiting anticipating

the last leaf’s graceful landing

a funeral hymn’s replay expected

mourned like the loss we always thought

we’d never meet again~

Nature’s Shimmer

stepping between light stream

shadows on flutter leaves

kicking loose stones on the trail

crow calls from high lands

autumn whispers hello

shedding what is over

part of living

part of ending

part of starting anew~

Layers

No one sits out here in this season

I heard them say

I am no one then as here I am

or maybe all this space is cool illusion

There was no sound on exit but birdsong

water dripping from places unseen

a canine barking in the distance

car wheels on a highway going north or south

Late afternoon the sun announces day’s slow denouement

I sip old wine that ought be poured out

remove my glasses so the view is softened

Through the veil of birch and poplar what is there

to see but layers of more birch and poplar half dressed

for possibility, a subdued anticipation

Someone will need to shovel the dog shit away from

the summer lawns awakening soon

Winter snow is such temporary camouflage🪶
