Here We Are

the options are there

nailed into a white wall

a spherical rainbow formation

labels printed with minuscule font

beckoning you lean in

inhale rain infused ink

petrichor rising

its vapour envelopes you

alters your sense

fate turns out the light

taps the switch

the loop begins at low volume

your voice in three part harmony

last phrase offered

exemplifies rhythms of your wisdom

you drink the sound of your own voice

but is this song the one

you want for your infinity ride

listen listen

behind yours is another’s voice

another’s recent call

voices pulse within your complex walls

the options are there

your inspiration, your raison d’être

waits for you somewhere

among the cacophony spins

rising repeating again and again

with neither pause nor resolve

between jubilation and despair

rehearsing its opening night

warming its hands

at the centre of your sun~

Eddie’s blues

I remember us singing sad old blues songs

how I would watch your lips for a cue

You would assure me by the look in your eyes

tell me I was doing well

And you played your guitar just like an angel

followed my voice in harmony

You played your guitar just like an angel

You’ll always be a part of me

Your daddy never did understand you

Said you never learned to be a man

Put your music and you down as worthless

Left you for lost he was a broken man

Night after night you played your heart out

Your fingers gave your soul some release

I know now that you were never meant to get old

I just hope that you found some peace

And you played your guitar just like an angel

followed my voice in harmony

You played your guitar just like an angel

You’ll always play on for me

I know you find it hard

sometimes to explain why it is

you tap out rhythm tap on everything

There are melodies you hear

soft as beating heart

There is rage paradiddle dee dee dee

Come passion shuffle

come snare me a dream

Who are we who expect

poet words to connect

The need and the answers

breathe within.

In that moment you have a choice

There’s always a choice.

Someone free said that once.

Afterward.

In that moment when you’re convinced

you’ve heard the crack of bone

your leaking heart losing faith

dissonant grace

felt it, felt yourself

You know with certainty something has broken

What comes next?

Even if you don’t know yet if there’s anything there

worth groping for, worth saving—

Can you hear the music through the roar and rumble

Can you still hum some favourite tune

a few bars to hold onto

some sorrowful blues maybe

some cowboy gush of lonely bravado

some whimsical ditty

to carry you through?
