What Surrounds Us Becomes

I am sitting on damp ground

in my ragged garden with light rain

There is something kinda peaceful

in gardens when spring’s all around

A robin—maybe the same I’ve seen—

lands graceful and soft for a drink

From down low my noticing is keen

look at the single blooming black violet

See how white sage has emerged again

yarrow’s leaves lift and fall like wings

Old chime in the juniper is rusting

but its song’s still subtle sweet

For all these gifts of life I am grateful

quieting voices of conflict and rage

I wish for everyone a space of garden

to be alone awhile with the solace of light rain~

Community Garden

no exit

one way out

enter by distraction or

unrecognized intention

not far away

traffic’s steady flow

here though

senses stir behind

a gossamer veil in sway

a muted awakening

a hum or whisper

slowed heart beat

in rhythm with soft

steps through damp grass

between agreed upon

boundaries marked

with subtlety of foliage

or wordless ‘keep out’ enclosure

I claim ownership to none

yet come to pause

near a weather grey picnic table

bask in the late afternoon light

watch clouds cross

this pale blue September sky

circle the looming presence

of a great Garry Oak memory tree

yet come to stroll

narrow paths between

bounty of life unseen

to view the fruits of

others’ love and labour and time

to listen for a familiar rhythm

to clear my world weary mind~

My Bountiful Messy Garden

an attraction to change plants seeds

the crack in a stone wall

the slip of light through a rusted key hole

the fragmented reflection in a broken mirror

the view beyond the window’s ledge

the transformation of summer spaces

what if

the grass on the front lawn retired

got buried with a gratitude farewell

wheelbarrows of soil laid the last blades to rest

curious pink worms explored cool dark mounds

beetles burrowed in and built new villages

a new lumpier landscape slowly emerged

yarrow and lavender and white sage

ferns and daisies and sunflowers

a dogwood a fig an apple a peach tree

a garden of leaves and possibilities

bees hummed and butterflies lingered

deer feasted when the red chair lay unoccupied

left behind their delicate hoof prints as thanks

colours and shapes spread out and grew tall

in the shade before sunrise I find my true place

sit still

in quiet voice read verses aloud

breathing deep and humming

one of so many tenants alive and thriving

in this bountiful messy garden🪶

One Cherry in the July Sun

weeds have taken hold

they must have known I stepped away awhile

water me! every living thing cries

this wild garden

these hummingbirds and butterflies

dust in my eyes

chorus of daisies waves lazy hello

I sigh into magnolia shade

and jasmine turns and rises along the rail

Jazz radio somewhere in the air

heatwave’s unrelenting but—

indoors can wait

it’s one of those things

call it willful suffering

everything’s alright here

one red cherry shines🪶
