Then A Bird

a bird then

not new

who hasn’t mused once

about the grace of flying?

to escape

to rise

to witness below from above

just to soar

unaffected

beyond the quotidian

to alight in a leafy tree awhile

ponder or chirp or peck

while a song of the heart rises

undaunted by threat

out of range of earthly chaos

I choose bird form for this drift

this brief suspension of human shape

temporarily exchanged

for expanse of wings

transportation dependable and stealth

for subtle feather layers

armour for a bruised heart

and soul bracing for turbulence

sights on an ebullient horizon~

The Visitor

I see you tipped forward in the columbine

another bird funeral candidate

a mystery death in this messy peace garden

I hesitate to remove you from your last perch

carry out the necessary task—

(melancholy comes too easily these days)

and you flutter, relocate to the cherry tree

its buds just emerging new

sunlight shining through from the east

We pause

Maybe you only wanted me to see you

contemplate your quiet grace🪶

Winter Bird

No silence like beauty in the alpine

Snowshoe edges slap in four four time

Below these banks, streams push boundaries

A pale sky promises more light tomorrow

This day is explored with slowed heartbeat

I surrender to forest tranquility

And you appear, Wisakedjak

Smoky gray ghost gliding on soft wings

To sing to me your whisper song

Lull me with your sweet corvid lullaby

Steal morning’s rations from my mitten grip🪶

Noise

calamity in the forest

when the owls alight in the high

shade of cedars to look

they are so unpopular with locals

who protest in every key relentlessly

maybe it’s the air of owl superiority

or the sleepy lidded glances of disdain

maybe it’s imagined owl oblivion—

new roses nod keeping graceful time

with soft summer wind

heads lowered in grave solidarity

there is a grand noise in the forest today

I can hear bird rage breaking through

even the cacophony of my thoughts

maybe i ought feel some gratitude

for the distraction🪶
